Understanding by Design Math Units
Elementary Algebra Strand and PreAlgebra Course

The units below were created on the Understanding by Design Exchange website through ASCD. This is a subscription based site and the annual fee is quite low for a school or entire school district. The site address is http://www.ubdexchange.org On the opening page, click "subscribe now" and the costs of joining will be indicated.

Teams of teachers created these units for the entire QCC algebra strand for elementary content, and the entire prealgebra course. See the grid below for correlation of QCC Standards and Unit Titles. These are first draft versions of the units and will be field-tested during the 2003-04 school year. As the teachers teach the units, the units will be revised and updated as needed. Therefore, the units below are already out of date, or soon will be. To take full advantage of the freshest version of the units, it is strongly recommended that a school district subscibe to the UBD website. The advantages are numerous:
1) The school system can create its own curriculum home page for mapping its own units. As an organizational tool, the district can link all of the learning elements (Curriculum, Assessment, and Instructional Best Practices) in one place;
2) The searchable features of the site allow teachers to search the entire UBD database for units written by teachers across the country. Content for Georgia schools is essentially the same in other states and there is no need to reinvent the wheel;
3) The templates are intuitive and teachers will not find them to difficult to utilize. The concepts of unit design are compatible with other planning systems, i.e., Learning Focused Schools, but the most significant feature of UBD is its Internet-based functionality.
