All literacy skills— from decoding to composition—root back to an oral foundation. This workshop is a call to action for the educators and specialists who touch the lives of early learners to design intentional opportunities for student growth. Join us as we shift from waiting for language to happen to intentionally creating the environment where it flourishes. We will move beyond the curriculum to explore the neuro-connection between a child’s spoken world and their future success in reading comprehension and written expression. Participants will unpack the standards, strengthen their understanding of the key components of literacy instruction, and develop practical strategies that promote student mastery from foundational skills through complex language use. The course emphasizes vertical alignment, explicit and systematic instruction, and the use of formative data to guide teaching decisions. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design and deliver cohesive ELA instruction that builds strong, sustainable language proficiency from the ground up. Participants will explore how interactive read-alouds serve as a powerful instructional tool for modeling strategic thinking, developing content knowledge, and engaging students in meaningful conversations about complex texts. Through modeling, collaborative planning, and classroom application, teachers will experience effective read-aloud practices as learners before designing standards-aligned lessons that promote student discourse, deepen understanding, and increase engagement.
