Implementing
What Works: A
Framework for
Lasting School
Improvement

Target Audience:
General Education
Teachers, Teacher
Leaders, & Leaders

This class focuses on how to create sustainable,
measurable change in school improvement efforts.
While schools frequently adopt new initiatives, many
produce limited results due to unclear focus, weak
implementation, or inconsistent monitoring.
Participants will examine why improvement efforts
often stall and how to design systems that lead to
lasting impact. Drawing on the research of John Hattie
(education researcher) (2024), participants will learn
to use effect sizes to prioritize the strategies that have
the greatest influence on student achievement. High-
impact practices such as feedback, formative
evaluation, prior knowledge, teacher clarity, self-
reported grades, and collective teacher efficacy will be
explored through the lens of practical application.
Using an implementation science framework,
participants will move through the stages of:
•
Exploration – Analyze screening tools,
achievement data, and current practices to
determine needs.
•
Preparation – Select evidence-based strategies
with strong effect sizes and develop a focused
action plan.
•
Implementation – Apply high-impact practices
with clarity and fidelity.
•
Full Implementation/Sustainability – Monitor
progress, refine practices, and build structures
that sustain long-term student growth.
By the end of the course, educators will be equipped to
lead focused, data-driven school improvement efforts
that produce meaningful and lasting gains in student
achievement.
