This professional development session guides teachers 
through a deeper, more actionable understanding of 
the Georgia ELA Standards by connecting student 
data, lessons learned from current practice, and 
renewed clarity around the intent of each standard. 
The session emphasizes how a clearer grasp of the 
standards—particularly the progression of skills 
across reading, writing, speaking, and language—
supports more strategic decisions about lesson 
pacing, scaffolding, and the order in which skills are 
introduced and revisited. Teachers will map standards 
to high‑leverage learning experiences, ensuring that 
each unit includes opportunities for explicit modeling, 
guided practice, and independent application. 
A key outcome of the session is the design or 
refinement of capstone projects for each unit. These 
culminating tasks will be aligned to priority standards, 
grounded in authentic literacy work, and structured to 
allow students to demonstrate mastery through 
reading, writing, and speaking.

This course equips educators with research-based 
strategies to strengthen vocabulary, grammar, 
decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension 
through explicit morphological instruction. 
Participants will explore how teaching prefixes, 
suffixes, roots, and base words deepens students’ 
understanding of language and supports their ability 
to read and write multi-syllabic words—one of the 
most persistent challenges for developing and 
struggling readers. Special attention will be given to 
the big ideas of vocabulary and grammar, highlighting 
how morphology instruction strengthens students’ 
understanding and application of word meanings, 
sentence structure, and academic language across the 
content areas to enhance reading comprehension. 
Through modeling, collaborative discussion, and 
classroom-ready examples, educators will learn how 
to integrate morphology into Tier 1 instruction and 
targeted interventions. By the end of the session, 
participants will leave equipped with practical 
routines, scaffolds, and instructional tools to help 
students break apart and make meaning from 
complex, multi-syllabic words—moving learners from 
unlocking word parts to mastery of language.
