The first step is to acknowledge difference: in our lived experiences, points of reference, and in our unintentional biases. As we explore these important principles, you will create an action plan to implement tangible ways to promote and celebrate your diverse community. You’ll also reflect and respond to some discussion prompts on the topic, as well as complete assignments to relate culturally responsive practices in your classroom and school community. Our learning targets for this class are: • How can I grow in my appreciation for the diverse experiences my students bring to the classroom? • How does bias unintentionally show up in my planning and teaching? • What actions can I take to deepen my understanding of my school community and the diverse needs of my students and their families? Jan. 21 – Feb. 18 Asynchronous/Online 20 $95 PLU Series #4: Literacy Tools Across Content and Grade Levels to Support Success Target Audience: Educators Seeking PLU’s In this survey course, educators will explore strategies and techniques to effectively support students with varying levels of reading proficiency, across content areas. Also, participants will consider the impact of the digital world on our young readers. Participants will delve into key aspects of instructional teaching practices aimed at ensuring equitable access to materials in print, including strategies for vocabulary, multi-lingual students, and foundations of language. Our learning targets for this class are: • What am I supposed to do if my students can’t read or don’t understand English well enough to complete the work in my content area? • How can I select resources – print, visual, online, and other - to make my curriculum accessible to all students, regardless of reading level? • What are some effective strategies to teach academic vocabulary? • How do I assess student writing in my curriculum area if I’m not a language arts teacher? March 11 – April 8 Asynchronous/Online 20 $95 PLU Series #5: Formative Assessment: Establishing and Maintaining a Routine of Checking for Understanding Target Audience: Educators Seeking PLU’s In this course, educators will explore various quick formative feedback methods to enhance daily instruction. Participants will learn how to effectively organize and utilize information from formative assessments to drive instructional decisions for individual students. Additionally, teachers will discover essential tech tools to assess student learning and develop strategies to integrate technology seamlessly into their practice. The course will delve into the impact of virtual learning on assessment practices, highlighting both benefits and challenges.
