in Foundations K-2

Target Audience:
K-2nd Grade Teachers,
Special Education
Teachers, &
Instructional Coaches

This class focuses on making foundational literacy
learning visible in K–2 classrooms. Participants will
explore the Foundations domain of Georgia’s K–2 ELA
standards, gaining a clear understanding of how skills
develop across grade levels. Teachers will examine
phonological awareness, concepts of print, phonics,
fluency, and handwriting, and learn how to make
these skills explicit through intentional instruction and
student-centered practices. Through collaboration,
participants will identify effective strategies to
support student mastery and ensure foundational
skills are clearly taught, observed, and assessed.

As part of the Making ELA Visible series, this course
focuses on the big idea of vocabulary, which falls
under the Language domain of the new ELA
standards. Participants will deepen their
understanding of the progression through which
students engage in a wide variety of written and
spoken activities to expand and refine their
vocabulary, build word analysis skills, and determine
or clarify the meanings of words and phrases.
Collaborating with grade-band peers will provide
opportunities to bridge this knowledge to classroom
practice.

“If I had more time…” sound familiar? This redesign
was built for busy educators. We’re replacing
traditional PD with a “Small Moves” approach—tiny,
strategic teaching shifts that boost student talk and
achievement without adding to your workload.
Instead of a one-and-done workshop, you’ll
experience a flexible coaching cycle inspired by Nancy
Motley’s framework:
•
Four 1-hour virtual Zoom sessions for
learning, collaboration, and sharing successes
•
Self-paced micro-assignments you can
complete on your own schedule
